Doin' It One More Time

There are nine sunlit doors facing the outer wall. The night is accented not by Brooklyn kids yelling at the top of their lungs for no reason, but by cricket, fireflys and the hum of the electric city that powers a good 60 percent of American’s entertainment industry. As I touched down with a view of one of the loveliest sunsets I can remember, I forgot all about the loud-ass but sweetheart Georgia girls (Think BAPS 20 years later) sitting behind me. I forgot about the fact that I left my belt and my toiletry case at the crib.

I'm back to my third home again, and it's all good, even as I'm without car, without agent or manager and without any idea of how I'm going to pull off my latest plan for world domination. As Glass and I sipped from his 40th birthday stash of Blue Label out on his patio to the sounds of Obama's acceptance speech, once again pontificating on life, love, politics, work and all in between. I felt at ease.

Then I came awake to the sounds of nothing but birds and the vicious pull of jet lag. It’s been so long. It’s been too long.

On the way over I finally finished Murph’s copy of Watchmen, which I’ve had for like three or four years. I wasn’t as much inspired by the fact that the movie will drop next year (though having read it the adaptation looks incredible), as I was about what made this such a classic in its own time. For the comic book fan, Watchmen is a masterpiece, even though I’m not sure about how well the actual film will go over with the masses. Brilliant writing though, fucking brilliant.

I also checked out a podcast recorded with the Coen Brothers when No Country for Old Men came out. God would I love to adapt dope novels. I imagine that working with other people’s books as source material would be so much easier than what it’s like to do my own.

My dreams have been crazy but clear, the perfect map for what seems like an impossible minefield. For my LA folks, I want to remind you that I'll be reading from Cake and Nightshift, a work-in-progress, at Eso Won Books tonight (4331 Degnan Blvd. 323-290-1048) I really hope that you can make it Out. Time to get on that grind. Out.
